In the author’s Accidental Alchemist series, that main character’s vegan diet is a central aspect of her identity and abilities, and also connects her story to those of other some of the other characters, so it makes sense to spend a lot of time discussing food. The main character is investigating a murder, so naturally, just as she is pursuing a new clue, she spends time discussing the chutney sandwich she’s made for lunch, or the cardamom shortbread cookies her grandparents make, in great detail. But on the minus side, the mystery part of the book takes a distant second place to descriptions of food and examinations of other mystery authors’ work. The description of the secret rooms and staircases was great! I’d like to live in a house with one of those. On the plus side, the author has a strong writing style and the incorporation of magic tricks and illusions adds some fun to the story. However, this book didn’t work all that well for me.
